Temperature testing

Independent temperature testing is a further service that Reedsafe can offer to its customers. Reedsafe can provide a written record of the performance and effectiveness of both heating and refrigeration catering equipment. Using annually calibrated test probes and a digital thermometer we can test

  • Fridges (domestic and commercial)
  • Freezers (chest and pedestal)
  • Cold rooms
  • Ovens
  • Bain marie's
  • Hot cupboards
  • Display cabinets (chilled and hot)
  • Commercial glass and dishwashers
  • Deep fat fryers

Reedsafe believe that temperature testing of deep fat fryers is essential as many of the fires that start in commercial kitchens are caused by the thermostat failing to cut out at the selected temperature which subsequently results in the cooking oil reaching its flash over point and igniting.

To test a fryer, we will first perform the usual PAT inspections listed on the Procedures page and when the appliance is known to be electrically sound, switch the fryer on, gradually increasing the temperature setting whilst taking measurements ensuring the element cuts out at the selected temperatures. The thermostat setting is then increased until the maximum operating temperature is reached and a further measurement is taken. Effectively, we are checking that the thermostat is not sticking or becoming lazy.

We can repeat a similar procedure with ovens, hot cupboards, griddles and bain marie's to name but just a few examples.

Commercial glasswashers and dishwashers can be tested to ensure that both the wash and rinse tanks are working at the optimum recommended temperatures for proper santitisation.

The temperature testing of refrigeration equipment is used to independently verify food products are being stored within safe limits as specified by the environmental health organisation.

Please note, with the exception of checking the thermostat works on an appliance, the above listed tests are not required by the IET.
